J.N. Lee's Lighter Collection

About Us

Every lighter is a witness to its era. This is my personal collection journal, and I hope it can serve as a guide for your journey into lighters collecting.

J.N. Lee

I am a lighter collector. During the Chinese New Year of 2025, I stumbled upon a video about antique lighters, which sparked my interest. I began searching for antique lighters on Xianyu and subsequently purchased many through direct sales and auctions. After acquiring over 40 lighters, I grew dissatisfied with domestic offerings and sought to explore foreign lighter history. Through active trading on eBay and browsing various international collectors' websites, I suddenly decided to document my collection. Born in 91, I have witnessed the evolution from handwritten journals to podcasts and social media. I wanted to create a personal website dedicated to my collection, detailing the brand and historical attributes of each piece. This may serve my own appreciation or aid future collectors in their studies. Ultimately, this is my personal journal, which I also wish to share publicly for others' reference. My writing style leans towards a translated tone, anticipating that international collectors may visit my site for their learning purposes.

Collection Philosophy

Why save?

The meaning of collecting lies not in ownership, but in legacy. In the antiques trade, this is called "passing on"—a meaningful concept that truly reflects reality. I was born in 91, and many of the lighters I've purchased were made before 1950. Their manufacturers and previous owners are long gone; essentially, I'm inheriting these items as part of someone's estate. This clearly illustrates the essence of collecting: every collector is merely a temporary custodian. One day, when I am no longer here, my collection will pass to the next enthusiast. That may be the true spirit of collecting. In my lighter collection, I favor traditional oil lighters or even earlier ignition mechanisms. We live in an era of rapid technological advancement—so fast that many struggle to keep up. Yet, amidst this relentless pace, I discovered something profound: through these simple yet ingeniously designed objects, I could connect with the history and creativity of the past. That's what captivated me. While studying, I learned about thousands of years of human history far beyond my own experience. But the history of the lighter—the one closest to my lifetime—is precisely why I began collecting them.

Criteria for Favorites

My collection focuses on three dimensions: historical value, craftsmanship, and design aesthetics.

  • Historical Value:Is this lighter's structure or design original and trendsetting?
  • Craftsmanship:Representing the pinnacle of craftsmanship at the time, these collections feature innovative technologies or breakthrough manufacturing techniques.
  • Design Aesthetics:A collectible that embodies a unique design philosophy, offering artistic value and aesthetic significance.
