Brand Introduction

S.T. DUPONT, founded by Simon Tissot-Dupont in 1872 (the brand name is derived from his initials). In the first half of the 20 century, it was Europe's most prestigious royal leather goods and luggage manufacturer. By the mid-20 century, the brand successfully expanded into creating the world's first true "modern luxury lighter." In both antique and modern collectibles markets, S.T. DUPONT embodies luxury, prestige, and absolute mechanical aesthetics. Renowned for its unparalleled Japanese Urushi lacquer craftsmanship, extreme precision micro-engraving on precious metals at the micron level, and its globally celebrated crisp metallic "Cling" sound upon opening, S.T. DUPONT remains the undisputed king among top-tier lighters.

Milestones

1. The Foundation of Luxury Leather Goods: The Second Empire Era (1872 – 1939) In 1872, Simon Tissot-Dupont, a former court photographer to Napoleon III at just 25 years old, established a high-end leather workshop in Paris. With an innate understanding of royal aesthetics, his trunks and diplomatic travel cases quickly became the height of fashion among Europe's elite. His clientele included the Queen of England and the Rothschild family. In the 1920s, the factory relocated to Faverge, where it began comprehensive research and development on metal hardware and locks. 2. War-Time Scarcity and the Birth of the First Lighter (1940 – 1945) Following the outbreak of World War II, the supply chain for luxury trunk materials (premium leather and European woods) was severed due to the war, and wealthy patrons could no longer travel internationally. To ensure the survival of hundreds of master craftsmen, André and Lucien, sons of Simon, decided in 1941 to pivot the factory's remaining aluminum and brass reserves toward developing a highly precise, portable pocket gasoline lighter. A Historic Turning Point: In 1941, the Maharajah of Patiala ordered 100 sets of premium travel trunks from S.T. Dupont and insisted that each trunk be fitted with a solid gold lighter. This extravagant order directly led to the mass production of S.T. Dupont's first luxury lighter. 3. The Western Gas Revolution and the Rise of the "S.T. Dupont Chime" (1950 – 1970) In 1952, following Flaminaire's lead, S.T. Dupont mastered the butane valve technology and launched its first gas lighter (the precursor to the Ligne 1). By the 1970s, the company had reduced mechanical tolerances to unimaginable micrometer levels, officially finalizing the Ligne 2 (Line 2) series. That iconic "click," a sound accompanying two generations of distinguished memories, has since echoed across global social circles. 4. Cementing Its Status as a Luxury Powerhouse (1980 – Present) After the 1970s, S.T. Dupont was briefly held by Hong Kong's First Pacific before being acquired by Dickson Concepts. Today, S.T. Dupont not only maintains its handcrafted lighter production at the Faverge atelier but has also extended its industry-leading lacquerware and micro-carving techniques to luxury writing instruments (Pens) and gentlemen's accessories.
